Abstract
A reduced state Viterbi decoder is introduced for a simple partial erasure model for magnetic recording systems. It is shown that the performance loss of an eight-state decoder is negligible compared to the original 16 state Viterbi decoder. The implementation issues of an eight-state decoder are also addressed.
