Abstract

A tape management system was developed in the mainframe era to manage the large number of demountable magnetic volumes. Migration from mainframes to distributed systems and the development of data storage systems necessitated a fresh appraisal of the functionality required from the volume management system. The evolution of the functions provided by the volume management system are described.>
