INTERMODALITY: SUCCESSES BY INTEGRATING PUBLIC TRANSPORT MODES AND CYCLING

In the Netherlands, a programme of research has been developed with the aim of improving insight into the role of the bicycle in the (public) transport chain. Studies have been carried out to make quantitative estimations of the market potentials of the use of the bicycle in a trip before and after public transport, the relations between travel distance and mode choice. Also, information has been gathered on the characteristics of the bike and ride-traveller, the interaction of the quality of the public transport and mode choice and the importance of facilities for the bicycle (parking, etc.). As a result of this research, experiments have been carried out with employers to stimulate the use of the bicycle as a supplement for public transport and with public transport companies to improve the trip chains with public transport and bicycle. The results indicate the opportunities of trip chains with public transport and bicycle and in the ways these chains can contribute to policy aims such as sustainability and reducing congestion. The most important factor underlying the success of the bicycle as part of the transport chain lies in the integration of different modes of transport. To achieve this a shift of mind is needed. Public transport, cars and bicycles are too often seen and treated as separate systems. The secret of success by integration is the main theme of the presentation.
