Abstract

Hypertext systems feature machine-supported links-both within and between documents-that open possibilities for using the computer as a communications and thinking tool. The article gives an introduction to the world of hypertext. Discusses the features of an idealized hypertext system, Focussing on machine-supported links as its essential feature. Surveys some of the most important design issues that go into fashioning a hypertext environment. Outlines the major application areas of hypertext technology and the hyper-text systems developed for these application areas.
