Jewish emigration from the USSR in 1980

Abstract
This is an analysis of Jewish emigration from the USSR from 1968 to the present with emphasis on the situation in 1980. Between 1968 and 1980 a total of 250000 Jews left the USSR the peak year being 1979 with 50000 emigrants. Total emigration declined to 20000 in 1980. The emigration is analyzed by region of origin and year. Consideration is also given to the drop-out phenomenon of migrants deciding on other final destinations than Israel. Political factors affecting the decline in the volume of emigration permitted by the Soviet authorities are discussed.
