Abstract
This study considers the linear restoring force in hydroelastic analysis on ships or offshore structures. It is complicated to express a complete form of linear restoring force for elastic modes such as bending and torsion, whereas it is clear for rigid modes. The linear restoring force is composed of structural restoring, fluid restoring, and gravity restoring. In detail, fluid restoring consists of pressure, normal vector, and mode variations in a generalized coordinate. However, the mode variation changes to a moment arm variation in a Cartesian coordinate. Each component of the complete form is derived from the definition of linear restoring force. Each portion of them is calculated and compared with each other for a very flexible experimental model and a 6500 TEU containership.
