Abstract
This paper considers oral literature from the viewpoint of oral media on one hand, and presents the necessity of understanding it from the perspective of the progressive course of media convergence from oral media, through letter media and radio media to digital media. It restricts the view of oral literature as media to regard it as a product of oral culture and compare it those media appearing later including literal culture, radio culture, and digital culture. However, by seeing oral literature as a product of ‘oral media,’ we can realize that the media created by human beings, after all, is nothing but the extension and convergence of human sense organs. Thus I propose that we approach oral literature from the perspective of oral media to explicate its vibrant and creative principles as a medium. This may provide the basis for fully and synchronically looking at those media appearing later including literal, radio, and digital media. For this, we need to not only fulfill literary study in oral media, but also synchronically examine how the principles of oral media are accommodated in literal media, radio media, and digital media respectively. And, it is necessary to approach it in the methodology named ‘oral cultural criticism,’ and establish it as a field of research. Only by doing so can we concretely explore a novel area of the study in oral literature.
