Abstract

Checkpoint pathways ensure that the progression of thecell cycle is restrained while repair is carried out on chromosomes that are damaged by UV or ionized radiation(Hartwell and Weinert 1989). A number of gene productsneeded for establishing the damage checkpoint have beenidentified. Importantly, most checkpoint proteins appearto be conserved through evolution (Elledge 1996).
