Abstract

Tests were conducted to determine if MS-222 Sandoz, a widely employed anesthetic for cold-blooded animals, could be used on black fly larvae (Diptera: Simuliidae). Preliminary studies, using Simulium vittatum, S. pictipes, and Prosimulium fuscum indicated that a concentration of about 1:2000 MS-222 Sandoz to water quickly quieted the larvae with sufficiently low larval mortality after 24 and 48 hours.
