Abstract

A COMPUTER METHOD IS DEVELOPED FOR THE SOLUTION OF BEAM AND BEAM-COLUMN PROBLEMS. A VARIETY OF EXTERNAL LOADING AND RESTRAINT CONDITIONS ARE APPLIED TO A FINITE-ELEMENT BEAM- COLUMN MODEL, AND A GENERAL BEAM-COLUMN EQUATION IS DEVELOPED FOR APPLICATION AT EACH STATION. INPUT LOADS AND RESTRAINTS CAN BE APPLIED AT ANY STATION, AND THE BENDING STIFFNESS MUST BE STATED AT EACH STATION. THE COMPUTER PROGRAM DEVELOPS THE MATRIX COEFFICIENTS AND CONTINUITY COEFFICIENTS FROM THE INPUT DATA AND SOLVES FOR THE DEFLECTIONS. ONCE THE DEFLECTIONS HAVE BEEN COMPUTED, THE FIRST AND SECOND DERIVATIVES ARE DETERMINED NUMERICALLY TO YIELD THE SLOPE AND BENDING MOMENT AT EACH STATION. SEVERAL EXAMPLE PROBLEMS ARE GIVEN. /BPR/
