The Lake Rossfjord herring (Clupea harengus L.) and its environment

Abstract

In Lake Rossfjord in north Norway, herring ( Clupea harengus L.) live under extreme conditions. A general description of the fauna, flora, and hydrography of Lake Rossfjord is given. Observations on the Lake Rossfjord herring are described, and the low number of vertebrae, the influence of temperature, salinity, and low oxygen content are discussed.
