Abstract

The short acting vasodilator, sodium nitro-prusside, has been used prior to the injection of contrast into the superior mesenteric artery during the investigation of portal hypertension in two patients. The films taken following vasodilatation demonstrated the venous filling more clearly. It was concluded that vasodilatation is a helpful adjunct in this investigation and sodium nitroprusside has advantages in producing this.
