Examining a possibility of usage of saliva for blood sugar tests

Abstract

In this paper, we examine a possibility of blood sugar tests with the saliva used. When saliva is employed, patients firstly feel little pain. Secondly, it is more convenient than urine tests. Thirdly, monitoring blood sugar continuously is possible by inserting a sensor within the mouth. Hence, it is very desirable to investigate into potential of blood-sugar tests by saliva, and the relation between research of blood sugar measurement and of saliva. This paper presents biosensors and blood sugar sensors. We also explain ingredients of saliva based on previous research. Lastly, we discuss the relations between saliva and diabetes, and between saliva and stress, because diabetes and stress cause the increase of blood sugar. With respect to both diabetes and the stress, related studies have reported that a protein called clusterin was detected in salivary glands. In addition, another protein called cortisol increases by stress and exercises. Based on the previous results, therefore, we can set a hypothesis that blood sugar may affect expression of clusterin and cortisol. This paper is a progressive research paper suggesting the hypothesis. Hopefully new biosensors using saliva to measure blood sugar can emerge in a near future, through scientific tests and experiments.
