THE CENTRE OF THE INVESTIGATION IS THE EXAMINATION OF THE QUESTION WHETHER ENGINEERS IN THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENTS OF THE DIVERSE CAR MANUFACTURERS MAKE ALLOWANCE FOR THE CONSCIOUS ACCEPTANCE OF WEAK SPOTS IN THE SAFETY SYSTEM OF A VEHICLE, RATHER IN THE SENSE OF A CONSCIOUS POSTPONEMENT OF THE INTRODUCTION OF EFFICIENT SAFETY ELEMENTS INTO MASS PRODUCTION. FURTHERMORE, IF AND HOW FAR OPERATIONAL AND ECONOMIC LIMITS PLAY A ROLE IN THE IMPROVEMENT OF VEHICLE SAFETY. WITH THE AID OF A COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS THE PROBLEMS OF ROAD ACCIDENTS FOR THE TOTAL ECONOMY ARE CONSIDERED. THAT THE MANUFACTURERS TAKE ROAD SAFETY SERIOUSLY IS SHOWN BY THE ILLUSTRATION OF NUMEROUS SAFETY ELEMENTS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SAFETY VEHICLE (ESV). INCREASING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SPHERE OF CAR SAFETY CAN ONLY BE ACHIEVED BY INCREASED RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION COSTS (AND THEREFORE THE PURCHASE PRICE), WHICH ARE SET NOT BY TECHNOLOGICAL BUT BY ECONOMIC LIMITS. RESULTS: CAR MANUFACTURERS SHOULD THEREFORE PRESENT MORE FAVOURABLY TO THEIR CUSTOMERS THE SAFETY TECHNIQUES WHICH ARE POSSIBLE IN THE CONSTRUCTION SPHERE (ACTIVE AND PASSIVE) SO THAT THERE IS A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE EFFECTS AND PARTICULARLY SO THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PURPOSE OF SPECIFIC SAFETY ELEMENTS.
