Abstract

A training programme for educational supervisors for medical doctors in specialist training was introduced in Norway in October 1986. By March 1997 approximately 550 senior consultants from major Norwegian hospitals had participated in the programme. The programme has been continuously evaluated by a questionnaire returned by participants at the closing session of each course. The effects of the training programme on educational supervision in specialist training has been evaluated in two postal survey studies. The results show that the training programme has helped the consultants to become better supervisors and motivated them to supervise trainees. The programme has stimulated the consultants to improve the structure of the teaching programmes in the hospital ward.
