Abstract
In 1988, the Ministry of Transportation of Quebec approved the final report of the feasibility study for the Montreal area Freeway Traffic Management system. It was agreed to proceed with the full implementation of two subsystems, incident detection and user information, and with partial implementation of two others, ramp metering and ramp diversion. The management of the 30 km freeway corridor is to be operated from a control center integrating all functions and providing the required coordination facilitates with outside agencies (police, maintenance, media, etc.). Elements of the required infrastructure (conduits, loop detectors) are being put in place as part of the ongoing rehabilitation work on the variable message signs, closed circuit television, communication equipment, cabling and computer equipment for partial system implementation on the Metropolitan Freeway and the Decarie Interchange.
