Abstract
This article examines the increase in the number of North American transit agencies considering or currently undergoing communications-based train control (CBTC) upgrades. Beyond New York City Transit, these include Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) in Philadelphia, Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) in Chicago, Boston's Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) in Toronto and San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). The author details individual efforts in these cities to enhance their transit systems via CBTC technology.
