THE SWEDISH NATIONAL ROAD AND TRAFFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE

The Institute was set up in 1971 with the object of coordinating research and development in road design, construction and maintenance, vehicle engineering, traffic engineering, medical aspects and road user behaviour. Its organisation consists of a road division, road user and vehicle division, traffic division and administrative division. The staff numbers approximately 160. Work is done for ministries, government boards and private organisations. 60% of the income of skr. 15.5 M in 1974 came from commissions, and the rest was a government grant. The institute will move to linkoping in 1975. Research and development is organised into 5 programmes, 1. Road transport planning (4%), 2. Road construction and maintenance (44%), 3. Vehicles (17%), 4. Road users (9%), 5. Traffic flow and accidents (26%). There is a description of the various projects in each programme. The institute is the Swedish centre within the IRRD. It continuously scans Swedish journals and lists of publications, and performs A survey of research projects once a year.
