Abstract

Abstract A supply chain is a complex, multilevel web of relationships between many companies, with multiple facilities spread around the globe and with multiple, often conflicting, objectives. Supply chain intermediaries, or middlemen, have evolved over time to alleviate the uncertainty and risk of the supply chain processes. Online intermediaries are a new breed of supply chain middlemen that use technology to provide transactional and informational support for these processes. This entry provides an overview of the key issues related to online intermediaries in supply chains and presents several examples of such intermediaries in various industries.
