Intelligent multiplexers with digital cross-connect capability-a requirement in network evolution

Abstract
Telephone companies and interexchanged carriers are offering new network-based services that include special services provisioning and increased bandwidth to the customer premises. Such services require totally network-compatible customer premises equipment, and remote maintenance is important to keep costs down. Thus, there is synergy between an intelligent, network-compatible DS1 multiplexer and a digital cross-connected system in a central office or point of presence. Adding common network management expands the concept to a broad section of the carrier's customer base. End-to end voice and data services can be provisioned digitally through the carrier's central office-a precursor to ISDN (integrated services digital network) services and a migration path in network evolution.>
