Functional Morphology of the Genitalia of Carcharodus Boeticus Stauderi Rev. (Lepidoptera, Hesperiidae)

The male and female genitalia of Carcharodus boeticus stauderi Rev. are described and figured. The function of various parts of the genitalia is described and discussed. It appears that the eighth abdominal sternite of the female has to attain a vertical position to enable the aedeagus to penetrate into the ostium bursae. The firm connection between the male and female genitalia is effected by the valvae of the male clasping a strongly inflated pouch between the seventh and eighth abdominal segment of the female, called the copulative pouch here.
