The late Paleozoic formations of the Lake Titicaca region are found, on the basis of abundant fusulines, to be of early Permian, Wolfcamp, age instead of upper Carboniferous. However, in the Tarma region of central Peru, the Permian is underlain by the Tarma group of mid-Pennsylvanian, Des Moines, age. Four measured stratigraphic sections show Permian strata ranging in thickness from about 2,000 to nearly 6,000 feet. Seventeen species of Permian and one of Pennsylvanian fusulines are described. The Permian faunas show striking faunal affinities with the Wolfcamp series of west Texas.
