Abstract
The authors analyze the decorrelation effect of two spatial smoothing methods when incoming narrowband signals are correlated. The performance analysis is based on the magnitude of the correlation coefficient of two correlated sources. With the same array size, the forward-backward smoothing at least performs better than the forward-only in terms of a smaller smoothed correlation coefficient. From the results of computer simulations, it is shown that forward-backward smoothing outperforms forward-only smoothing in all circumstances and provides a better possibility to attain a full decorrelation, i.e. the correlation coefficient is zero.>
