Tubifex newfei n.sp. (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) with a preliminary reappraisal of the genus

Abstract

Tubifex newfei n.sp. (Oligochaeta, Tubificidae) from Newfoundland is described. The worm shows affinities with both Tubifex and Peloscolex. As a result of this and other evidence some generic definitions within the Tubificinae are questioned, discussed, and it is concluded that the characters of the genitalia presently used to define these genera are inadequate.
