Abstract
Following five years of confusion and uncertainty about the concept of advanced practice within nursing and the clarification of the role of the Nurse practitioner which incorporates advanced nursing within its remit, the Government's Making a Difference (Department of Health, 1999) clarifies matters. In this document it highlights its vision for three levels of practitioners: registered practitioners, specialist practitioners (including health visitors, district nurses and practice nurses) and nurse consultants.
