Abstract
In this paper the author discusses the nature of the interaction between transport and land use activity. The main operational characteristics of various urban transport modes are outlined and the separate and integrated roles are assessed in relation to the main land use functions in urban areas. An account is also given of the current status of research in transportation planning, both here and abroad (a).
