Abstract
In the paper, a new derailment index /spl lambda/ for evaluation of wheel climb derailment based on primary suspension forces is proposed. It is easy to be applied because of its minimum criterion characteristic. It can also be used to explain the cause why wheel climb derailments are almost always accompanied by some wheel unloading.
