ACTH-Incluced Alterations in Catecholamine Metabolism in Man

Abstract

The excretion of 3-methoxy-4-hydroxymandelic acid (MHMA) and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) was studied in normal subjects and in hypophysectomized patients after the administration of ACTH. The administration of ACTH produced a significant increased excretion of MHPG in the normal subjects (MHPG rose from 1.33 ± 0.64 to 2.57 ± 1.34 mg/24 hr p < 0.05) and in the untreated hypophysectomized patients (MHPG rose from 1.1 ± 0.35 to 3.33 ± 0.64 mg/24 hr, p < 0.001) and did not change the excretion of MHMA. In the hypophysectomized patients treated with dexamethasone ACTH did not induce any significant changes in the excretion of MHMA or MHPG. These findings demonstrate that ACTH diverts the metabolism of catecholamines from the oxidative to the reductive pathway.
