Abstract

The development objective of the Third Water Supply and Sanitation for Low Income Communities (PAMSIMAS) Project for Indonesia is to increase the number of under-served rural and peri-urban populations accessing sustainable water supply and sanitation services. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) check the direction of groundwater flow; the well should be placed upstream; (2) build a basin in each toilet room and fill them from the well by pipe channel or container; (3) install a ventilation pipe and a manhole access in the septic tank; (4) a sewer carrying human waste should discharge to a treatment plant or a septic tank; and (5) a septic tank or other type of settling tank will also partially treat sewage.
