Abstract
Particle acceleration by double layers is compared with other possible mechanisms of particle acceleration in the auroral acceleration region. Emphasis is on a recent suggestion that electrostatic wave turbulence is the only tenable explanation for particle acceleration in the auroral acceleration region.>
