Mammals and Birds of the Proposed Nature Study Centre Area, Malayattoor, Kerala

A survey of large mammals and birds were carried out in the forests of Malayattoor area during August, 1991 to September, 1992. Large mammals found in the area are bonnet Macaque (Macaca radiata), Sambar (Cervus unicolor), Wild Boar (Sus scroffa) and Jackal (Canis aureus). Indirect evidence of Porcupine (Hystrix indica), Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata), Blacknaped Hare (Lepus nigricollis) and Toddy Cat (Paradoxurus hermaphrodites) were also noted. Flying Lizard (Draca dussumieri), a Malayan element in the South Indian fauna was also observed apart from the 71 species of birds.
