Abstract

Methods: This study was conducted to determine whether the beginning of atopic march is related to transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN). Seventy-eight term infants were treated in the newborn Intensive Care Unit due to TTN. A case-matched control group of 78 term newborns without any health problem was selected. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics. The rate of childhood asthma and atopic dermatitis among patients with a diagnosis of TTN was found to be higher than the controls (odds ratio [OR]=5.87, 95% confidence interval [CI]=2.88–11.98, P<0.01; OR=2.87, 95% CI=1.30–6.37, P<0.05, respectively). Conclusion: This study showed that TTN may be the first presentation of atopic march and large-scale studies should be performed to elucidate this possible relation.
