Abstract

We investigate the performance effects and organizational antecedents of ambidexterity defined as the simultaneous pursuit of exploitation and exploration. We argue that ambidexterity (a) is positively related to performance, and (b) may arise from both context (contextual ambidexterity) or structure (structural ambidexterity). Data collected from 284 organizations support our hypotheses.
