Five premenarchial rhesus monkeys were treated with human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) and chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) to induce ovulation. All animals had large elevations in serum estradiol concentrations and perineal sex skin development in response to HMG injections. Four of five monkeys had peripheral progesterone concentrations suggestive of ovulation after HCG administration and corpora lutea were confirmed histologically in two animals. Thus, ovaries of reproductively immature monkeys are capable of steroid secretion and ovulation when provided with sufficient gonadotropin stimulation.
