Abstract

It has been suggested that magnetic white dwarfs may simply be stars that evolve from progenitors with strong internal fields. It is shown that the suppression of core convection which would result from such fields would have a significant influence on a star's evolutionary track but no obvious observational effects. We cannot rule out the possibility of strong, central magnetic fields in stars of 2-5 solar masses on evolutionary arguments alone.
