Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fluid intake on performance, body temperature and body weight loss during intense swimming training. The subjects were nine male swimmers, swum a set of 20 repeat 50 m swims on a 1 minute interval at three fluid intake conditions (ad libitum, no fluid intake, and controlled intake: 50 ml of fluid at every 4th interval). The body temperature (oral temperature), heart rate, RPE, and body weight were measured before and after interval training. The mean water temperature during training was 30.6°C ± 0.2. Heart rate and RPE after interval training was 164 ± 9.6, 168 ± 6.0, 170 ± 9.6 bpm, 16.3± 1.0, 17.0 ± 0.6, 16.7 ± 1.2 at ad libitum, controlled, and no fluid intake, respectively. The mean swimming time was 34.70 ± 1.6, 35.61 ± 2.0, 36.37 ± 0.7 sec., the difference of body temperature was 0.93 ± 0.45, 0.67 ± 0.38, 0.97 ± 0.32°C, the weight loss was 0.22 ± 0.26, 0.02 ± 0.10, 0.38± 0.13 kg, and fluid intake ratio (fluid intake / sweat loss × 100) was 45.6, 95.5, 0% at ad libitum, controlled, and no fluid intake, respectively. In conclusion, fluid intake during interval swimming training may keep high performance and suppress body temperature. Also, these results suggested that swimmers have to take fluid during training to prevent dehydration.
