Abstract
Mode-coupling effects in a He–Ne laser are described by means of a mode-suppression technique. In the extreme case, alternate enhancement and complete quenching of modes were observed when only one mode was suppressed. These effects are explained in terms of mode competition as described by Lamb. A method is developed to measure the coupling parameters experimentally. Results are given for the three-mode case.
