Abstract
The extraordinary progress made in the development of devices for directly reading out the structural and biochemical features of body tissues in the past decade has afforded many choices in muscle study and many new quantitative parameters, particularly those relating to the critical levels of oxygen delivery and energy metabolism. This article reviews several such devices and their application to the noninvasive study of energy metabolism in living tissues.
