Abstract

The appearance of the ventricular ependyma studied by scanning electron microscopy in normal rats and hydrocephalic post-mortem human specimens has been compared. The density of cilia is less on the roof and lateral walls of the dilated ventricles. The mechanism of the loss of cilia is discussed, and it is postulated that the function of cilia in the ventricular system is to provide a cooling system for the brain.
