Abstract
SUMMARY Mycobacterium tuberculosis (B.C.G.) metabolised isoniazid, a hydrazone of isoniazid and other hydrazides. An isoniazid resistant culture also metabolised isoniazid. It is suggested that the degradation of hydrazides is a detoxication mechanism and not directly related to the mode of action of isoniazid. It is further suggested that cultures resistant to isoniazid metabolise isoniazid as fast as they take it up, while sensitive strains bind isoniazid more rapidly than they can metabolise it.
