Abstract
Scholars investigating the literary background that influenced the Brontë children fail to appreciate the vigorous literary activity taking place in the Haworth and Keighley areas at the time of their youth. John Milligan, medical officer of the Keighley Poor Law Union; Joseph Hardaker, Haworth's first druggist; and Abraham Wildman, master woolcomber and Haworth's relieving officer, were only three of the local literati.
