Abstract
Two cases of pseudogout are discussed. In the synovial fluid of the affected joints persistent low alkaline phosphatase activity was found. Such low synovial fluid levels and such a discrepancy between synovial fluid and serum values of alkaline phosphatase could not be detected in patients with other diseases. Alkaline phosphatase levels in synovial fluids from different patients were not proportional to the respective total protein and globulin values. Low activity of alkaline phosphatase in the synovial fluid in pseudogout may be related to local deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals.
