Abstract
For a number of years there has been some confusion concerning the life cycle of the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover. Patch (1925) gave accounts of the sexual forms of an aphid on Sedum which she considered to be this species. The males produced on Sedum were described as wingless. This is an unusual condition since in related aphid species having a life cycle similar to the one Patch describes, the males are winged and are produced on secondary hosts. In addition, these other species, which are referred to as the true migratory aphids, hibernate as eggs on deciduous trees or shrubs.
