Abstract
This paper focuses on the following areas: the motivation and elements that have come together to precipitate the electric power industry restructuring ; the concept of electric power industry deregulation; the benefits of deregulation, and issues presently confronting deregulation; the key participants and sectors of electric power industry deregulation; the industry-academic divide, and ways to bridge the gap through industry-academic collaboration; the introduction of "new" electric power programs in academia, and resources that address the needs of this "new" power industry landscape; special literature, courses and topics that could help prepare both novice and experienced engineers for careers in the present electric power engineering industry, and its related disciplines; and research and career opportunities within the "new" electric power industry.
