Abstract
Seeds of 45 species of Bauhinia (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Seeds of eight species have stomata which are mostly normal in appearance but lack subsidiary cells and are slightly recessed. Varying degrees of distortion or obscuring cuticular deposits were found in some species. This is the first unambiguous report of stomata on seeds of Leguminosae. Fruits of two of the eight species were also examined. Raised stomata with conspicuous subsidiary cells were found only on the outer pericarp surface.
