Abstract
THE RESEARCH REPORTED WAS CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE MONEY DRIVERS ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR ADDITIONAL NIGHT DRIVING COMFORT, WHEN GIVEN A CHOICE BETWEEN ALTERNATIVE HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS WHICH PROVIDE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF COMFORT. THREE HEADLAMP SYSTEMS, CONVENTIONAL LOW BEAM (LB), CONVENTIONAL HIGH BEAM (HB), AND HIGH INTENSITY POLARIZED BEAM (HIP), WERE USED TO DEMONSTRATE DEGREE OF COMFORT BY EXPOSING THE DRIVER TO DIFFERENT LEVELS OF GLARE FROM ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS. THE RESULTS OF THE TEST PROCEDURE DESCRIBED SHOWED THAT OLDER DRIVERS ARE WILLING TO PAY CONSIDERABLY FOR A LOW-GLARE SYSTEM WHEN OFFERED A FREE HIGH-GLARE SYSTEM.
