Abstract Drosophila flavohirta Malloch is adapted to life in flowers of Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae) and is widespread in Australia; it is probably an indigenous Australian species. The fly has spread to southern Africa where its proliferation has been associated with falls in honey production. We here record it from Madagascar where it was found in abundance in flowers of Eugenia sp. (Myrtaceae) as well as on Eucalyptus. We predict that it will be found in other parts of the world.
