Abstract

European Community regional policy over recent years has shown a considerable degree of change and development. Major proposals introduced in 1973 were implemented in a much-revised form in 1975, with further substantial changes being made in 1978. This paper contains a survey of the economic case for a Community regional policy, followed by a critical appraisal of existing policies. The economic case for a Community regional policy is based on the need to reduce both the existing regional disparities in the E.E.C. and also regional disparities likely to arise as a consequence of further economic integration. The role of the European Regional Development Fund and other financial instruments, together with Community attempts to coordinate regional policies in the E.E.C. are examined.
