Abstract

The rupture process of the Jiashi, Xinjiang MS6.5 earthquake on February 24, 2003 was estimated by the finite fault model using far field broadband P wave records of CDSN and IRIS. The results indicate that this earthquake is a thrusting event on the northerly dipping fault with small left-lateral strike slip. The fault plane has a strike of 300° and a dip of 28°. The focal depth is 7.5km. The focal mechanism of this earthquake is different from that of earthquakes occurred in 1997 and 1998, but similar to that of the Artux, Xinjiang earthquake of 1996. We infer that the earthquake was caused by thrust faulting in the Tianshan mountains due to the Tarim basin pushing northward.
