Potential use of industrial wastewater in irrigation - case study of Ibadan Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract

This research work examined existing method of industrial waste effluents disposal of five industries, as well as look into the possibility of using such effluents as potential water source for irrigation. These industries are the Nigerian Breweries PLC, 7-Up Bottling PLC, Quality Foods Manufacturing Company, Askar Paints Nigeria Limited and West African Batteries Limited. The analysis of the effluents from these industries were undertaken to determine the chemical and physical characteristics such as alkalinity, pH. Temperature 0C, colour, total dissolved solids, sodium adsorption ratio, PO4, SO4, Cl, K, heavy metals and trace elements. Results indicate that majority of the effluents from these industries have high relative conformity with irrigation water because of their relative conformity with FAO recommended (FAO 1992) standards. Although all the industries considered treat their effluent except the Askar Paints Nigeria Limited, there was still some significant levels of contaminants in the effluent generated by these industries as indicated by the results of the chemical analysis. Hence a thorough study and improvement of the current disposal methods are necessary. Some ways of improving effluent disposal have been suggested.
